It is used for representing 2 dimensional documents into a resolution-independent and device-independent, fixed-layout format. Each PDF file includes all the content of a 2-D document including text, fonts, images, and 2-D vector graphics for composing the document.
Anyone can make several applications to read and write the PDF files so not to avail royalties to Adobe systems. As the Adobe holds PDF patent and allows royalty free use in developing software, it is very easy to have such application for Adobe Acrobat.
