Is it possible to search punctuation marks or only a part of the word in Google desktop?
Punctuation marks like question marks, special characters, exclamatory marks etc are not recognized by Google desktop. But since some characters may be useful while making a search these options are being considered. Partial words searches are possible in file names through the Quick find feature. Wild card searches or use of the wild card asterisk in phrase searches are not supported currently by the Google desktop home page.
I want to use Google Desktop over a network. Is it possible?
As of now one cannot install Google Desktop over a network. Google desktop cannot be located on different machines. It is just located on one machine. You files located on the network. To specify the drives you want to select just follow these steps. If you own Google Desktop 3.0.0 and above, these are the steps for you. Click the "Desktop Preferences" link on the Google Desktop homepage. At the top of the page you will find the "Local Indexing" link, which you need to click on. Click the "Add drive or folder to search" link located in the "Search These Locations" section. Then add the drives you want to index by browsing. At last click on Save Preferences.
If you are using Google desktop 2.0 go to the Google Desktop homepage and then click on the "Desktop Preferences" link. Next you need to click on the "Add drive or folder to search" link on the "Search These Locations" section. Then add the drives you want to index and click on Save preferences. After this process is complete the drives will be shortly indexed. The index will also be automatically updated.
Do I get to see ads on Google desktop?
In case you are searching from the Google home page there are no ads displayed next to the results. But you will get to see ads if you search on Google.
Are Boolean searches supported by Google desktop?
You will see all the search results that are there in your search items. It is not necessary to take the help of Boolean operators. Also remember that the order in which you type a search query does have an effect on the search results.
I want to make use of Google desktop. Should I be connected to the Internet?
Both your search items as well as Google desktop are situated on your machines. To view live Internet pages you need the Internet connection. But you can also view the cached copies of web pages, which are on your machine as well. Just click on the cached link and access these pages.
What is the basis for sorting the results?
Between a web browser interface and the Quick Search Box (QSB) interface, the results are sorted in a different way. By default the results are sorted according to dates. The most recent views top the search result’s list.
