Norton Security Scan: To save you happy day

Nowadays many people are using computer to perform their regular office work or some time to have fun to get rid of stress. But there is something out there, known as computer virus, which can affect your daily work considerably. A virus can tease you and can end your happy day suddenly disappointed.

A computer virus is a computer program, which can copy itself and infect a computer with no permission of the user. A virus can spread from one computer to another by taking its host to the unaffected computer. The examples are a user sends a virus affected program (or anything) over a network or internet or by moving it via a removable media like USB drive, CD etc.

Antivirus softwares are developed to identify and remove the viruses. Antivirus software usually employs 2 different techniques to achieve this; scanning files to find identified virus matching definitions in a virus dictionary and identifying doubtful performance from any program. This analysis usually includes port monitoring, data captures and other techniques.

Most commercial antivirus softwares employ both approaches with importance on the virus dictionary technique. Various companies are producing antivirus softwares today. Amongst them, Symantec’s Norton antivirus is very popular.

Norton Antivirus (NAV) is a famous creation of Symantec Corporation and widely used antivirus program. Google Pack has made it easy to setup and protect your PC and now they have added 2 new applications to make your PC safer- Symantec's Norton Security Scan, which detects and eliminates viruses, and PC Tool’s Spyware Doctor Starter Edition which is a high-ranked anti-spyware utility. Both are free and have automatic protection updates.

They have also updated their screensaver. You can turn your computer into a digital picture frame which displays pictures from photo feeds (i.e. continuously updated photos from the internet). Many photo-sharing sites have already supported this. Hence it's now easy to keep in touch with your friends and family.

Features: Like most standard antivirus software, Norton Antivirus offers real-time protection from viruses, spyware, worms, keyloggers and other malwares also. The program also has a real-time scanner.

Symantec's Norton LiveUpdate gives virus definition updates that enable Norton Antivirus to identify viruses known to Symantec- a totality of 73,722 viruses up to October, 2007. In order to get updates, an official subscription is necessary. The user can still receive program updates for free though its subscription is over but can’t download updates without renovating the subscription or buying a new version.

The corporate edition supports a client/server strategy to update virus definitions. Each workstation may not have LiveUpdate installed, but can be linked to a central server. The server will actually update itself with LiveUpdate and distribute the updates to the client stations. This is to condense redundant updates over the managerial network.

Google Norton Antivirus also tries to remove spyware and adware. They are forms of malware which are not computer viruses. It battles in this capacity with the freeware Spybot.

Starting with Norton Antivirus 2004, it includes an anti-copying feature named ‘Product Activation’ that is similar to the activation procedure of Windows XP and Office XP. This procedure for Norton Antivirus 2004 can be made by 2 methods: over the Internet or by phone. Beginning with Norton Antivirus 2008, activation can only be made on the Internet.
